House Of Bols – Amsterdam

House Of Bols is one of those spots in Amsterdam where you must have heard of before you know it even exists. While close to big museums as the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum it is quickly overlooked by tourists who visit the city. I’ve heard of House Of Bols before, while I was browsing for things to do in Amsterdam. I thought it looked like a pretty cool experience, and I would never say no to a cocktail so I’ve added it to my bucket list right away. Recently I got the chance to visit House Of Bols myself.. finally! So I went off to Amsterdam, with a mission to experience Bols and her liquors, and with a mission to tell more people about it. Because really, when you have some time left in Amsterdam, or when you are in the need for a nice drink you shouldn’t skip a visit to House Of Bols.

For those who not know Bols, here is just a short intro: Bols is a distillery – the oldest one in Amsterdam – specialized in liquors and genevers. Pretty simple right? Bols has a HUGE arrangement of liquors, as well. I mean I’ve worked in a couple of restaurants and bars when I was younger, but those restaurants only had two or three bottles of Bols. So I thought that it couldn’t be a lot more than that. But seriously, every flavor you are now thinking of is included in the assortiment of Bols. Kiwi, Banana, Yoghurt, Coffee, Coconut, Lychee, Honey, Peppermint, Watermelon.. you name it. It’s crazy.

In the House Of Bols you learn all about the brand Bols and the foundation of the brand. But most of all: It’s all about your senses. In different rooms you can taste, smell and see the ingredients of Bols and test if you can recognize the ingredients that are used. Pretty cool to do! To be honest, I sucked at recognizing the ingredients by smelling or tasting them. I didn’t even had one anwser right. However, that didn’t make it less fun though!

At the end of the (self-guided) tour you’ll be able to select a cocktail, print a recipe and order it at the bar of House Of Bols (definitely one of the most pretty bars I’ve ever seen by the way). You can also order a shot of a liquor or genever you’ve seen before in the museum. Those cocktailshakers you’ll meet at the bar know how to make a proper cocktail. It was fun to watch them ‘shake’ our cocktails and throwing bottles around in the air and all that. Though you want to try it yourself you know that it screams ‘Don’t try this at home’. The cocktails me and my sister ordered were amazingly delicious by the way. My sister immediately printed out the recipe again so she could make them herself.
